Britney Spears’ memoir, The Woman in Me, is set to become a movie. Universal Pictures acquired the rights to adapt the book, sharing the news on August 1st, with production details yet to be announced.
The film rights attracted interest from multiple high-profile bidders. According to The Ankler, notable figures like Margot Robbie, Brad Pitt, Shonda Rhimes, and Reese Witherspoon were among those competing for the project. Major studios including Netflix, Disney, Warner Brothers, Fox, and Sony also sought the rights.
On the same day Universal Pictures announced the acquisition, Britney Spears confirmed the news. On X, she shared her excitement.
Fans are excited for the film adaptation of The Woman in Me, which became a bestseller in 2023. The memoir reveals personal insights, including Britney’s relationship with Justin Timberlake, her 2007 head-shaving incident as an act of self-reclamation, and the details of an abortion she had during their relationship; which she described as one of the most painful experiences of her life. Spears also discusses the limitations of her conservatorship, highlighting her achievements during that time despite the constraints imposed on her in her memoir.
Jon M. Chu, known for 2024’s Wicked, will direct the film, with Marc Platt, also a producer on Wicked, set to produce. No cast announcements have been made yet.
