Manga has come to captivate readers in the US like never before. Its unique and engaging style of storytelling has made it a popular reading choice in the country. Now guess which publisher has come out on top in this segment? The answer lies in the new presentation on this that was made at the San Diego Comic Con event. As ComicBook reported, it is Viz Media that has emerged at the top and has more than half of the market to itself. To be specific, it held 57 percent market share in 2023. While that is impressive, that still is a bit lower than the 60 percent market share it held in 2022.
Kodansha and Yen Press are both at a distant second spot with 13 percent of the market for each while Seven Seas is at the fourth spot with 9 percent of the market share. Dark Horse and Square Enix come in next with 4 percent and 2 percent market share respectively. Thereafter, its Tokyopop with 1 percent on the market while all the other publishers have a combined market share of 1 percent.
On the whole, it has been $381.16 million USD worth of manga sales that was recorded in 2023 which however is 13.15 percent lower than in 2022. Demand for manga had reached an all time high during the pandemic. To put hat in figures, the segment witnessed a 145.19 percent growth during 2020 and 2021.
Coming to the best selling manga of 2023, it is Demon Slayer that came out on top. Next, it was Chainsaw Man that turned out to be the second most popular manga followed by Spy x Family, Jujutsu Kaisen, and then the Dark Horse Comics’ Berserk.
