The Tolino Shine is their latest-generation e-reader, featuring a traditional black-and-white e-paper display. It is aimed at German-speaking markets but does have English support. The big selling point is the Carta 1300 display, which makes fonts razor-sharp. The device can also play audiobooks via Bluetooth and is waterproof.

The Tolino Shine features a 6-inch E INK Carta 1300 e-paper panel. Its resolution is 1448 x 1072, with Dark Mode and 300 PPI. The screen is recessed and does not have glass. Because the exposed e-paper screen is closer to your eyes, text will pop. The e-reader only comes in one colour: black. The ComfortLight PRO adjustable brightness system provides both white and amber LED lights for reading at night.

Underneath the hood is a MediaTek processor MT8113L – ARM A53 @1GHz, 512MB of RAM, and 16GB of internal storage. Listen to audiobooks via Bluetooth 5.0 and pair earbuds, headphones, or an external speaker. USB-C will allow you to transfer content to your e-reader and charge it. It is powered by a low-end 1,500 mAh battery, and the dimensions are 112 x 160 x 9.2 mm and weighs 174 g

The Shine supports a myriad of e-book formats. EPUB, MOBI, PDF, TXT, CBR, and CBZ are compatible with books from the Onleihe public libraries. With Tolino cloud synchronization, you never lose track of your reading and listening progress, regardless of your device. Customers can decide what e-book provider they want to do business with or deal with simultaneously. This includes Thalia, Hugendubel, Weltbild, buecher.de, ebook.de, Osiander, and Orell Füssli.

The Shine is now based on Linux instead of Android. The e-reader design is mainly based on the Rakuten Kobo Clara BW. However, the software experience should be faster and more stable; this is more noticeable if you have an older Shine e-reader. This is a great entry-level unit and perfect for users who want to buy a Kindle alternative scattered to the German-speaking.
