Amazon has announced that they are shutting down their App Store for Android. This will occur on August 20th, 2025. The company sent a notice to developers indicating that they will no longer be able to submit new apps to the store. The company is also shuttering their Amazon Coins program.
The Amazon App Store launched in March 2011 with just over 4,000 apps. It was preloaded on Amazon Fire devices and some Android and BlackBerry handsets. A few years after the launch, the store could be downloaded from the Amazon website and installed on any Android smartphone or tablet. The company also had its store on Microsoft devices for a couple of years, but Microsoft discontinued its Android runtime system.
“We’ve decided to discontinue the Amazon Apps Store on Android to focus our efforts on the App Store experience on our own devices, as that’s where the overwhelming majority of our customers currently engage with it,” a company spokesperson said. The company added that the app store will still be functional on its devices like Fire TV and Fire Tablet.
So, this is basically what is happening. The Amazon App Store will no longer work on outside devices and only function on their Fire Tablets and TV. Considering that Google Play is the most widely used app store on the planet, it makes sense for Amazon not to support outside devices.
