The Sol Reader is the world’s first wearable e-reader, a product that’s proud to say it can only do one thing: read ebooks. It provides a distraction-free experience. “A low-tech device in a high-tech world” is the official description because “fewer distractions mean more focus.” And reading should be focused, regardless of where you might be at the time.
The Sol Reader features two 1.3” E INK displays with a resolution of 256×256. Directly in front of your eyeballs, with a design that helps block distractions, helping you focus on the text. Thanks to the side-lit with warm glow LEDs (3000K), you can read during the day or night and feature a light sensor to adjust for surrounding conditions automatically. A moldable silicone nose bridge and adjustable diopter allow nearly anyone to read without correction lenses, regardless of eyesight.
The Sol Reader is powered by a dual-core 240MHz processor, 8MB RAM, and 64MB storage. Its 470mAh battery should provide 25 hours of reading. It comes with a Bluetooth remote to navigate menus and make selections. It is very light and easy to wear on your eyes, weighing a paltry 104g.
The Sol Reader will not read books from Amazon, Barnes and Noble, or Kobo. Instead, the company has developed a mobile app for iOS and Android that allows you to manage your Sol Reader seamlessly. You can sideload your DRM-free ebooks in EPUB format and send articles and newsletters to your Sol Reader. Since it doesn’t support paid ebooks, you won’t be able to read any bestsellers and are relegated to royalty-free books unless you resort to piracy.
The glasses are well-designed and thoughtfully assembled because the Sol Reader is a first-generation product. They don’t look like typical AR/VR glasses, like the Apple Vision Pro, Oculus Rift and others, which are heavy and bulky. The glasses cost $399 and come with a 30-day return window from the website.
